Extraterrestrial Culture Day is celebrated on the second Tuesday of February and takes place on February 8 this year. The day exists to “celebrate and honor all past, present, and future extraterrestrial visitors in ways to enhance relationships among all citizens of the cosmos, known and unknown,” according to the bill that introduced the day. On March 21, 2003, New Mexico’s general assembly passed the House Memorial 44 along with the establishment of the holiday. Although Extraterrestrial Culture Day specifically originated in New Mexico, today is celebrated in places far from its borders. Any person interested in the mysteriousness of the universe and alien life may be seen celebrating the day.

HISTORY OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL CULTURE DAY

We should be thanking State Representative Daniel Foley of Roswell for introducing the day with House Bill 766. The bill designated the day to be celebrated every second Thursday of February, but when the memorial was passed, the holiday was changed to every second Tuesday of February instead. According to the memorial, the day was created to honor extraterrestrials who have contributed to the worldwide recognition of New Mexico through their many and ongoing visitations, sightings, and unexplained mysteries.

Extraterrestrial life has also been attributed to technological developments, experiments, as well as explorations. The world of Hollywood has also been influenced by alien life, generating storylines that typically portray the accomplishments of alien beings throughout the universe. Sounds bizarre, right? The reason why Foley decided to introduce the day can be traced back to 1947, to a spot about 75 miles from Roswell. At this spot, rancher Mac Brazel found dirt in his sheep pasture.

He called up the local sheriff after finding metal sticks that were taped together, heavy paper-like material that seemed glossy, and bits of foil and plastic reflectors. Roswell Army Force Base showed up at the scene with armored trucks to take away the debris following a call from the sheriff.

On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Daily Record printed a front-page story titled “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region.” The next day, RAAF made a statement that a weather balloon had been found instead of a flying saucer that everyone claims it to be. However, witnesses of the debris think otherwise. They believe that the debris looked nothing like a weather balloon, but more of an alien-like flying saucer
